Economic relations

German-Azerbaijani economic relations are one of the most dynamically developing areas of cooperation.

In 2007, Mr. M.Glos, Federal Minister of Economy and Technology of the Federal Republic of Germany paid an official visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan. In 2011, 2012 and 2013 Mr. I.Abasov, Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in 2011 and 2013 Mr. S.Mustafayev, Minister of Economic Development of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in 2013 and 2017 Mr. A.Garayev, Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in 2014 Mr. H.Asadov, Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in 2014 and 2017, Mr. H.Baghirov, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in 2015 and 2016, Mr. N.Aliyev, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in 2017 Mr. R.Hasanov, Chairman of State Committee for Standardization, Metrology and Patents of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. S.Talibov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. I.Babayev, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sport of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in 2018 Mr. R.Guluzade, Minister of Trasnport, Communication and High Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. S.Talibov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Mr N.Samadov, Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan paid working visits to the Federal Republic of Germany. Moreover, business delegations under the leadership of the federal states of Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as the German Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations have visited Azerbaijan. A number of business forums and various economic events were organized between both countries.

German-Azerbaijani Economic Forum was held on 7 June 2016 in Berlin at the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy during working visit of Mr. Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, to the Federal Republic of Germany on 6-7 June 2016. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Mr. Sigmar Gabriel, the Vice-Chancellor, Federal Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy of the Federal Republic of Germany attended the opening ceremony of the very Forum. German-Azerbaijani Economic Forum was organized on 11 October 2017 in Baku with the support of the German Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations and Eastern Europe Business Association of Germany. Business Forum entitled “Opportunities of Trans-Caspian East-West Trade & Transit Corridor” was organized on 22 November 2017 in Berlin.

Azerbaijan is the most significant trade and economic partner of Germany in South Caucasus. According to the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy of the Federal Republic of Germany, in 2017, share of Azerbaijan in the overall trade turnover between Germany and South Caucasus was around 66%.

According to the German Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control, in 2017, Azerbaijan was Germany’s 8th biggest crude oil supplier. In 2017, Azerbaijan exported almost 2,5 mln thousand tons of crude oil to Germany.

The German-Azerbaijani High-Level Working Group on Trade and Investments was established on 5 May 2011. The co-chairs of the very Group are Mr. S.Valiyev, the Head of Administration of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Dr. E.Franz, the Director General of the External Economic Policy of the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy of the Federal Republic of Germany. The meetings of the Group were held on 19-21 October 2011 in Berlin, on 13 November 2012 in Baku, on 17-18 July 2013 in Berlin, on 29-30 September 2014 in Baku, on 5 November 2015 in Berlin, on 23-24 November 2016 in Baku and 22 November 2017 in Berlin.

 

On 12 November 2012, the German-Azerbaijani Chamber of Commerce was opened in Baku. Almost 200 companies from both sides are members of the German-Azerbaijani Chamber of Commerce.
