Economic relations

German-Azerbaijan economic relations considered as one of the most dynamically developing areas of cooperation.

In the year 2007 Federal Minister of Economy and Technology of the Federal Republic of Germany Michael Glos had a business trip to the Republic of Azerbaijan, in 2011, 2012 and 2013 Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ismet Abbasov, in 2011 and 2013 Minister of Economic Development of the Republic of Azerbaijan Shahin Mustafayev, in 2013 Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan Abulfas Garayev, in 2014 Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Asadov, in 2014 Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan Huseyngulu Baghirov, in 2015 and 2016 Minister of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan Natig Aliyev had business trips to the Federal Republic of Germany. Moreover, business delegations under the political leadership of the federal states of Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia have visited Azerbaijan. A number of business forums and various economic events were organized between both countries.

Azerbaijan-German Economic Forum was held in Berlin in the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy on 7th of June 2016 during working visit of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to the Federal Republic of Germany on 6-7 of June 2016. President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Vice-Chancellor, Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy of the Federal Republic of Germany Sigmar Gabriel attended the opening ceremony of the forum.

Azerbaijan is the most significant trade and economic partner of Germany in South Caucasus. According to the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy of the Federal Republic of Germany, in 2015 share of Azerbaijan in the overall trade turnover between Germany and South Caucasus amounted around 80%.

According to the German Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control Azerbaijan is the Germany’s 6th biggest crude oil supplier. In 2015 Azerbaijan exported 5,3 million tons of crude oil to Germany.

Referring to the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2015 the volume of foreign trade turnover of the Republic of Azerbaijan with the Federal Republic of Germany amounted USD 1.914,04 million, including imports USD 690,08 million, exports USD 1.223,96 million. The trade balance was positive USD 533,88 million during 2015. The share of the Federative Republic of Germany in foreign trade turnover of the Republic of Azerbaijan was 9.27%, including 7.48% for import and 10.71% for export in year 2015.

The German-Azerbaijan High-Level Working Group on Trade and Investments was established on 05.05.2011. The co-chairs of this group are Samir Valiyev, Head of Administration of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Eckhard Franz, Director General of the External Economic Policy of the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy of the Federal Republic of Germany. The meetings of the Group were held on October 19-21, 2011 in Berlin, on November 13, 2012 in Baku, on July 17-18, 2013 in Berlin, on September 29-30, 2014 in Baku and on November 5, 2015 in Berlin.

On 12th of November 2012 the German-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce was opened in Baku. This is the second officially opened Chamber of Commerce in the CIS. More than 130 companies both from Germany and Azerbaijan are members to this Chamber of Commerce.

The State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic, Azerbaijan Airlines and International Bank of Azerbaijan have representations in Germany.
