Good News for Azerbaijani Citizens Living in Germany
As a result of long-term efforts with the German side, new rules regarding the recognition of official documents have come into force, which will significantly facilitate the work of our citizens.
✅ What Has Changed?
The legalization of documents by embassies between Germany and Azerbaijan has now been completely discontinued. In its place, the application of the apostille procedure has begun.
📄 What Does This Mean?
- Both countries are parties to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention. According to this Convention, only an apostille stamp is sufficient for the recognition in the other country of official documents issued in one country. No additional legalization or confirmation is required.
- As a result of the relevant efforts with the German side, the Apostille Convention will enter into full force between the two states in March 2026.
- Thus, official documents issued in Germany are confirmed only with an apostille stamp by the relevant German state institutions, and this is sufficient for their recognition in Azerbaijan. There is no longer any need to additionally legalize these documents at the Azerbaijani Embassy in Berlin.
- Similarly, documents issued in Azerbaijan are also recognized in Germany only with an apostille stamp, and no additional legalization is required at the German Embassy in Baku.
This important innovation once again clearly demonstrates that the effective cooperation based on mutual trust between Azerbaijan and Germany continues to develop sustainably for the benefit of our peoples' interests.
