September 27 – Commemoration Day Solemnly Observed in Berlin
Berlin, September 25, 2025 – On the occasion of Azerbaijan’s Commemoration Day, September 27, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Germany hosted a solemn memorial event at the Azerbaijan Cultural Center in Berlin.
Among the guests were representatives of the diplomatic corps, prominent figures from academia and culture, members of the Azerbaijani and Turkish communities, as well as friends of Azerbaijan and members of the media.
Honoring the Fallen
The ceremony opened with a minute of silence to honor the Azerbaijani heroes who gave their lives defending their country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
In his address, Nasimi Aghayev, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Germany, emphasized the special significance of September 27 in Azerbaijan’s modern history. He highlighted that the sacrifice of the fallen had enabled the nation, five years ago, to end decades of unlawful occupation of Azerbaijani territory, to restore historical justice, and to enforce international law.
Ambassador Aghayev stressed that Azerbaijan had never accepted the status quo during nearly three decades of occupation. Under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, a strong and capable army had been built, the country’s economic foundations strengthened, and its international standing significantly consolidated. The 44-day Patriotic War ultimately secured the liberation of the occupied territories and the restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity. With the anti-terror measures of September 2023, the separatist movement in Garabagh was also brought to an end, ensuring the country’s full sovereignty.
A Perspective for Lasting Peace
Looking to the future of the region, the Ambassador underlined the historic significance of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, initialed on August 8 in Washington, as well as the Joint Declaration, also signed in Washington. These documents open the door to a new era of stability and cooperation in the South Caucasus.
“This marks the end of a conflict that has lasted almost 40 years. For the first time, both countries have agreed on a framework for permanently peaceful relations based on the principles of territorial integrity, state sovereignty, and the inviolability of borders. This peace sends a powerful message to the world: even seemingly insurmountable conflicts can be resolved through dialogue and a willingness to compromise. And it shows that true strength does not lie in defeating the other, but in the readiness to extend a hand in reconciliation,” Ambassador Aghayev stated.
He emphasized that Azerbaijan’s peace initiatives would benefit not only the two nations but the entire region.
Prominent journalist Ewald König highlighted in his remarks that the agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia offers hope for lasting peace at a time of numerous conflicts in Europe. Given Azerbaijan’s geopolitical position as a bridge between Europe and Asia, König underscored the country’s strategic importance—particularly for Europe’s energy security.
Cinematic Tribute
The event concluded with the screening of the moving documentary “Shusha, You Are Free!”, produced by the Baku Media Center, which honors the heroism of the Azerbaijani armed forces and commemorates the fallen soldiers.
