Groundbreaking Event in Berlin on the “Historic Peace Between Azerbaijan and Armenia”

On January 27, 2026, a high-level event on the topic “Turning Point in the South Caucasus: Historic Peace Between Azerbaijan and Armenia” took place at the German Parliamentary Society in Berlin. The forum was organized by the German ICI Institute in cooperation with Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.

The event—held in this format for the first time in Germany—was attended by representatives of the Federal Government, members of the Bundestag, experts, journalists, as well as figures from business and academia. Speeches were delivered by Federal Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Chairman of the Bundestag’s Foreign Affairs Committee Armin Laschet, and the Ambassadors of Azerbaijan and Armenia to Germany, Nasimi Aghayev and Viktor Yengibaryan.

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that he had long been familiar with the former conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He described the progress achieved in the peace process over the past year as a significant success and a milestone in European history. Given the multitude of global crises, every successfully resolved conflict represents a gain. The peace process also opens up an opportunity for both states to develop good, intact, and untroubled relations with Europe and the European Union.

Armin Laschet emphasized that a joint event in Berlin involving both ambassadors was unprecedented. He noted that the peace process is of strategic importance not only for the region but also for Germany.

Azerbaijan’s Ambassador Nasimi Aghayev stated that following the 2020 war, Azerbaijan, under the visionary leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, had taken concrete steps to establish lasting peace. Azerbaijan had been the initiator of the peace agenda and had presented the fundamental principles as well as the first draft of a peace agreement. Germany, he noted, had played a constructive role, particularly during the decisive phase of the negotiations. At the peace summit held in Washington in August of last year, a peaceful chapter in relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia had been opened.

Aghayev stressed that for a sustainable, irreversible and legally secured peace, it is necessary to align the Armenian constitution with the principles of the peace agreement and to promptly eliminate any territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

The ambassador highlighted the concrete steps Azerbaijan has taken in recent months to strengthen peace and noted that dialogue between parliaments and civil societies has been intensified.

The ambassador attached particular importance to the planned TRIPP route, which is intended to enable an unimpeded connectivity between the mainland Azerbaijan and its Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan. This connection could contribute to the economic stabilization of the region while also strengthening trade and supply chains for Europe and Germany.

Following the speeches, the ambassadors answered questions from the audience. The event attracted strong interest among participants.
