Economic cooperation

German-Azerbaijani economic relations are one of the dynamically developing areas of cooperation. Azerbaijan is the most significant economic and trade partner of Germany in the South Caucasus. According to the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy of the Federal Republic of Germany, in 2020, the share of Azerbaijan in the overall trade turnover between Germany and South Caucasus was around 65%. Furthermore, according to the German Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control, in 2020, Azerbaijan was Germany’s 9th biggest crude oil supplier. In 2020, Azerbaijan exported almost 2,5 mln. tons of crude oil to Germany.

Mutual visits on the highest level between two countries, as well as economic events held in Germany in order to promote business opportunities of Azerbaijan and “Made in Azerbaijan” brand particularly contribute to the expansion of bilateral economic and trade relations, and raise economic ties to a new level.

The German-Azerbaijani High-Level Working Group on Trade and Investments was established on 5 May 2011. Currently, the co-chairmen of the very Group are Mr. R.Najaf, the Deputy Minister of Economy of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Dr. E.Franz, the Director General of the External Economic Policy of the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy of the Federal Republic of Germany. The meetings of the Group were held on 19-21 October 2011 in Berlin, 13 November 2012 in Baku, 17-18 July 2013 in Berlin, 29-30 September 2014 in Baku, 5 November 2015 in Berlin, 23-24 November 2016 in Baku, 22 November 2017 in Berlin and 31 January 2019 in Baku.

On 12 November 2012, the German-Azerbaijani Chamber of Commerce was opened in Baku. Almost 150 companies, from both sides, are members of the German-Azerbaijani Chamber of Commerce. As the official representative of the German economy in Azerbaijan, the German-Azerbaijani Chamber of Commerce provides information services and support to the companies in their market and business research. 

With the aim of promoting economic and tourism potential of the country, Azerbaijan participates with a national stand at various international exhibitions held in Germany.
